The 30 Pound Challenge

Just another weblog

Updated pictures…finally! March 29, 2010

Hello ya’ll

Alright, so I’ve held off long enough… 25 pounds is a good marker to finally update the before and after pictures. I haven’t wanted to take them because even though I know I’ve lost weight… there are days when I just don’t see it. Sure my pants are loose and my bras are 2 sizes too big… but when I look at myself in the mirror, it’s the same girl I’ve always seen. I finally broke down and decided to get it over with. Keep in mind I’m dressed for a day at the zoo, I have yet to have my pants hemmed and I had no desire to do my hair. I’m pretty sure the zoo animals don’t care what I look like.

wow was I tan!

So there’s not much change from the front, I will always have chubby cheeks, big hips and big thighs… well unless I start running, which I keep saying I’m going to start and then never do it…

From the side view is when I realized, wow… I really did lose weight! Thanks again Darlyn for the stellar piecing together of the photos. I’m retarded when it comes to that stuff.

So today Cam and I went to our little zoo here in Fresno. Apparently every other jobless mom in the area had the same idea. Little too crowded for my taste but we had fun.

pretending to eat Cams chicken rings

He was nice enough to share a couple. I almost had a moment where I ripped them out of his hands and shoved them down my throat… but I managed to control myself.

The good ol' standby

When ever I’m at a place like the zoo, or some sort of park I usually go with a hotdog because if nothing else, I know it’s not deep-fried. We shared a water and went back to taking in the animals. My favorite section is the rainforest “habitat”. I put quotations because it’s literally the size of a small childs bedroom… but they’ve got some neat frogs and a sloth.

I lurv you misser fwoggy.

I don’t care if they’re poisonous… I WANT ONE!

We ended the trip with me caving to 2 toys from the gift shop instead of the one I tried to hold firm at. We had a great time and our pass doesn’t expire till the end of April so looks like we’ll be making a couple more trips in the near future.

Looks like I need to get back to entertaining the boy. We’re planting tomatoes and basil today!

Thanks for stopping by

Spring Break. March 28, 2010

Happy Sunday ya’ll

How was everyone’s weekend? Good I hope. Mine was uneventful. Friday my dad started his new job at a local winery… I was pulling for this job for obvious reasons lol. With letting go of one household stress, always comes a new stress. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super glad he found a job… but now I have to find after school care for my son on the days I have classes during the time he’s not in school. Not only is it a money issue, but I don’t really trust anyone but his immediate family with him. I’m sure that’s a mom thing. Both of us are currently on spring break so this gives me a week to find someone cheap and trustworthy to pick him up after school and watch him for a half hour, 2 days a week. My boyfriend has agreed to come out and do the job the first week after spring break if I can’t find someone in time since he is currently unemployed. That eased the stress a bit.

My mother decided to fix my dad a special dinner to celebrate the new job. Paella and lemon merengue pie. With my running around that day, I forgot to eat lunch and by the time I realized I was hungry, dinner was almost ready. I just held out because I didn’t want to ruin my appetite when such a yummy meal was coming up.

Omg was it good! There is nothing low-fat or low-calorie about this dish, so it was all about portion control. Rice, chicken thighs with the skin (i don’t eat the skin cuz it grosses me out), linguica, shrimp and clams… my stomach growls just thinking about it. I kept myself under control, although I did have some french bread with real butter slathered on it lol.  I did not have a piece of pie, even though it was very tempting. I went for an oatmeal raisin chocolate chip walnut cookie instead. The paella must have have been seriously salty because I became super thirsty and chugged a couple big glasses of water that night. That made for a fun night of sleeping… not to mention not eating all day then eating a big greasy meal… my stomach was not my friend after.

I got on the scale yesterday to see if I had caused any damage during the week.

3/27/10 134.5 lbs.

I have hit the 25 pound mark. 5 more pounds to go! The wii has officially put me in the “normal” category for weight… I am no longer overweight. Very excited and proud. With everything good, I get a little negativity from random corners of my life. This week was no exception. But with this journey I’ve been on, I’ve learned a little bit how to be secure in myself, love who I am and appreciate those that love me that much more.

This week will be interesting. Cam and I will be home all week and I’m determined to not have us spend it sitting on our butts staring at a tv or computer screen. I’ve found some cool little science experiments to do that should be fun. Might take a trip to our little zoo and take some nature walks on the trail by the house.

Any other suggestions? I’d love to hear any cheap ideas to keep him from being bored all week.

Thanks for stopping by!

And So Begins 2010 January 4, 2010

This is my kind of work-out!

Happy New Year ya’ll!

How was your holiday? I hope it was good!

My family and family friends went to Bass Lake for 4 days and enjoyed the holiday in the mountains. We had a really great time and I actually got in a few unconventional work-outs. I ate really well and I’m verrrrry shocked that I did.

Just to give you an idea, usually for New Years we do a crab and steak feed and this year was no exception. I did a ton of give and take this weekend. Weighing out what I really want to splurge on… like CRAB! I went with coffee and a piece of fruit for breakfast almost every morning. All except for one because they made chorizo and egg burritos…. couldn’t resist. I had no soda! NONE! That’s a fact that I’m very proud of. I even had the chance to walk to the store several times and snag one up and drink it before I got back to the cabin lol. New Years eve we had finger foods which can be either really good, because it’s all bite sized things and you can portion control yourself, or it can be really bad because it’s bite sized things and you CAN’T portion control yourself. I portion controlled okay… I mainly hate tastes of the cheese based dips and spreads and went for the shrimp cocktail. I had a glass of wine and that was the only alcoholic drink I had all weekend.

I went hog-wild on the crab. I think I probably ate 2 whole crabs to myself and didn’t skimp on the butter. But I didn’t feel too bad because earlier that day we played pretty hard in the snow for several hours. We also did a good walk on the beach and around the neighborhood. The crab was soooooo good and well worth the “Christy’s saving herself for crabs” jokes. Thankfully there was no real desserts that were made the whole weekend cept for some cookies. That helped me, instead of scarfing down on pie, or cake I had a small cookie and a cup of coffee.

The last night we were there my mother made an amazing prime rib. I stuck with a small piece and didn’t go for seconds. She also made roasted potatoes which is very hard for me to resist. Again, I put some on my plate and stuck with that portion, no seconds. I ate very well the whole weekend and never felt stuffed or so full I wanted to puke. I drank so much water that I started getting annoyed with how much I was peeing. Especially at night!

It paid off though! Today I got on my wii and checked how I did over the weekend before starting my active work-out. I lost .4 pounds! It’s always gratifying when you see a loss, no matter what kind it is. I didn’t go into the weekend thinking I was going to try to lose anything. I just didn’t want to gain too much! I’m doing something right, and not feeling like I’m “dieting”. Just smarter choices, compromise and excercise.

My first 2010 weigh in was 150.4 lbs.

I have a little over 9 weeks to get to my goal… I’m not getting my hopes up to high.  I’m might not make my goal weight by then, but I am reaching the goal of being healthier and making lifestyle changes in order to reach that goal at some point. I am very proud of myself and can’t wait till I get to that 130 pounds.

Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope those of you who are embarking on your “get healthy” resolutions, get some inspiration from this blog and that it helps motivate you to make better choices in your quest. It’s amazing what you learn about yourself when you remove the things that normally comfort you and keep you down.

I hope wonderful things come to you this new year and thanks again for following my progress!

New Years Resolutions… December 30, 2009

Filed under: Body Image,Christmas,Fitness,Food,Health,Holiday,Life,Parties,Weight Loss — christyfabela @ 1:19 pm

Hello ya’ll,

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I know mine was very special. We went to Disneyland during Christmas. Mainly because my son was born on Christmas Eve. He had the best time because he’s at an age now where he can go on almost all the rides. It was nuts there though! Way too crowded for me. I don’t mind waiting in line for rides, but when I have to wait in a sea of shoulder to shoulder people to get out of the park… (who are mostly rude) It gets me a bit claustrophobic.

So I tackled Disneyland with the idea that I would only splurge on items that I can only really get there. If I can get it at home, then I would pick a salad so that I could save myself for the real good stuff. Mornings were mainly a cup of coffee and possibly a bite of a pastry or part of a full egg breakfast.  We had brought healthy snacks for back at the hotel but for the most part they went untouched. For some reason I felt seriously full the entire trip, which helped.  To give you an idea of how the trip started off, here’s a picture of our first stop in LA. Lunch at Pink’s…

Yes I ate every last bite of mine, and felt horribly sick after word. The entire trip I made choices of “do I want this soda or desert with dinner?” I did not go hog-wild while there. It also helps being on a very strict budget. I never felt deprived or hungry. The amount of walking you do in the park is awesome. And Tarzan’s Tree is a fantastic buns and thigh workout! my muscles were twitching after climbing that thing several times.

Surprisingly enough when I got home I decided to weigh myself so I knew what the damage from finals week and the trip was. I had only gained 1 pound! I thought for sure I would be up 5 pounds. Phew!

Santa brought me the new Wii Active Trainer. Wow… it’s awesome! Far superior to Wii Fit. With journals to keep track of progress, eating and activity, a progressive workout and a 30 day challenge to jump-start you… it really feels like you have a personal trainer. The workouts are fantastic. I’m 3 days into it and yesterday my legs were so sore I was walking funny. Every day the Wii chooses the workout and it keeps track of how well you do each excercise so that the next day it can make it harder if you’re doing well at it. Since starting on Sunday I’ve already lost that pound.

Current weight 150 lbs.

Most current body shot.

A little under 3 months to go and a little more than 20 pounds to go. I think it’s totally obtainable. The next thing to tackle is New Years. I won’t be worrying about drinking since I probably won’t be. But we will be going to a family friends get together. There will be crab, and steak… oh and numerous finger foods all day long. Bethenny Frankle from Housewives of New York and author of her new book “The Skinnygirl Dish” looks at our bodies as a bank account. Check her out. I love her ideas and will be purchasing her book. So I will be taking that into account tomorrow.

What’s my New Years Resolution? Don’t have one. I don’t feel you need a big event to get you motivated to be the best person you can be. Why not start today? I do know that I want to start dancing again this upcoming year.. and if anyone knows of a reasonably priced dance studio in the Fresno area, please let me know! I hope you all have a great and safe New Years. See you next year!

Are we there yet? December 20, 2009

Wow. It’s been awhile since I posted. Mainly because of finals. It’s been such a stressful couple weeks. But I’m happy to report I am officially done with the semester from hell. Yay! I’m fairly sure I did good in all my classes but I won’t really know till after Christmas (what kind of junk is that?)

So I would like to be reporting that I kept up with my excercise routine and eating healthy throughout the time I’ve been absent… But I can’t. I swear I did the freshman fifteen in the last two weeks of my Junior semester lol. Every piece of crap I could get my hands on, I ate it! I went on Dr. Pepper over load! I didn’t weigh, I didn’t excercise and I wasn’t sleeping. Luckily my pants still fit, so I know I didn’t gain too much back. I’m honestly afraid to get on the scale. But I will.

Next week we are heading off to Disneyland for my sons birthday and Christmas. I’m going to do my best to keep control of my eating. I’ve prepared already with healthy snacks to take and put in our back packs. My father bought a 12 pack of dr. pepper…. and the crack addict in me says “TAKE IT!” But I really don’t want to be a slave to it any more. Even with it sitting in the fridge I’ve dipped into it. Is there a Dr. Pepper anonymous somewhere? I need help.

I’ve come to terms that i most likely will not reach my goal by the deadline I’ve set for myself. But I will say this, I refuse to give up. I recently had a reminder of why I’m doing this. This is my chance to make myself a better person. And for those who come on this blog  just to get a laugh, maybe you need to look at yourself and ask yourself why you even feel the need to see what I’m up to. I guarantee you that I could care less what you’re doing and I sure wouldn’t waste my time trying to find out. That’s the last I will touch on that subject.

With that being said, those of you that have been uplifting and supportive, thank you. This past year has been a tremendous learning experience for me and I can only hope to grow and learn more with the upcoming year.

I will try to post from DL, but we will see. If not, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

Oh… p.s.

I received a Kodak zi8 pocket video cam for an early Christmas present, soooo I might actually do a video blog from time to time!

Late Weigh-in and tips from the Today show. December 4, 2009

Happy Friday ya’ll

The next couple weeks are going to be a mad house! Not only are finals in just a couple weeks, but all my classes have decided to do tests the week before finals also!? WTF! This will definitely affect my excercise time, not to mention the eating that comes with studying.

This week I did pretty good. I didn’t work out every day, but I did work out. And I splurged a couple times this week with food… but nothing to crazy.

I weighed in at 150.4 pounds! Nothing major but it did go down! I’m obviously doing something right. And the fact that I didn’t go up from Thanksgiving and a Holiday party… I say I’m doin alright.

The other day on the Today Show, they had some really great tips on how to eat during the holidays that I wanted to share with you. You can also click on the link below for more healthy tips from Joy.

For your holiday baking, when it calls for oil, you can replace it with equal value of apple sauce or canned pumpkin. You can save up to 1800 calories! Also you can reduce the sugar it calls for.

People often think that when you know you’re going to a party or having a big holiday meal they should skip breakfast. Best plan is to have little light meals throughout the day so that you are not starving by the time the function starts and will be less likely to binge on the holiday food.

When it comes to cocktails, stay away from sugar filled mixed drinks. The simpler the better. Drinks that are 100-120 calories each include: 5 oz glass of wine or champagne, rum and diet coke and a gin and diet tonic.

One of my fave tips she gave was use the smaller dessert plates, load up on whatever you want, but stick to just one plate. Also if your thing is desserts, load up on fruit if there is any then pick the most decadent dessert you can find and have a palm sized serving.

She also mention some of the worst holiday foods include prime rib, pecan pie and eggnog.

Thankfully I don’t like eggnog 😉

Hope you found that interesting! Have a great weekend!

And the Holiday Eating Begins! November 29, 2009

Me Breaking Santa's Leg.

Okay, so I’ve never been a fan of how early Christmas starts. This year I saw Christmas stuff going up after Halloween…

But I do have to say that the Christmas party thrown by some family friends was great! The kids had a blast, the food was great and so was the company.

Just like Thanksgiving I went in with a game plan. The game plan originally was “don’t eat too much”. lol  Well I did “ok”. Not as well as I’d like to have done. I had a couple glasses of wine which is never good because it usually promotes me to eat more than I normally would. I had a couple devilled eggs, some chips and dip, sweet and sour meatballs, a crab cake, chinese chicken salad, bruschetta with roasted garlic…. the list goes on. I also had a Dr. Pepper. I did my best to stay away from the pies and cakes (not like it would have made a difference with how much I ate on the regular food).

New party tip… if there are babies at the party, wash those hands and hold them! With arms full of baby you can’t keep picking at food! (Well you could if you really wanted to) But I found it kept me occupied and took my mind of the goodies in the other room.

hands full = mouth empty

Santa came and that also kept me away from the food. I didn’t do as well as I wanted, but I could have done a whole lot worse! I even joined Joy and Jesse for a walk of the dogs.

I didn’t feel over stuffed when I went to bed last night, and didn’t wake up hungry this morning. The holidays are the worst time for watching what you eat, especially with parties! The only tips I can give are these…

  • Try to fill up on healthy things before you go
  • Drink lots of water while you’re there
  • Ask if you can bring something, that way there’s at least one dish you know you can eat without feeling bad.
  • Portion control
  • Engage in conversation, the more you talk, the less you will put in your mouth.

What do you do when you go to holiday parties?  Share tips or good healthy recipes that you use for your shin-digs! Thanks for stopping by!
